Dorothy was born in San Marcos, TX, September 28, 1920 to Harold and Sue Cox Richards. She graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1942 and spent her professional life teaching high school English, impacting hundreds of students at Lanier High School in Austin, preparing them for the real world during her teaching career.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Tom L. Hutchison, Sr., her father Harold Richards, mother Sue Cox Richards, 2 brothers, Harold (Janice) and B. C. (Lillian) Richards, 3 sisters, Catherine Beasley (John), Barbara Perkins (Ray), and Virginia Olson (Jim).
She is survived by her four children Tom Hutchison, Jr. (Susan), Austin; Judy Anderson (Jim), Round Rock; Margaret Liardon (Darrell), Burleson; Dorothy Ingram (Randy), Spring; ten grandchildren and their spouses, and 31 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her cherished brother, James Richards (Catherine), Decatur, TX, and sister-in-law Janice Jackson (Will), Knoxville, TN and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
For many years she tended the flower gardens at St. John's UMC and loved creating, planting and tending her beautiful rock gardens which brought joy to everyone.
Love permeated her life. She was the fourth of seven children and incorporated her love of family and friends into a lifetime of making a difference in every life she touched. Her faith was established early and was evidenced through the lives of those touched by her teaching and caregiving. She had a thirst for learning and a passion for teaching. Her family, friends and many students were the grateful recipients of the living water that flowed through her.
She was active all of her life. Her early athletic talents were evidenced on the tennis court in her early years and continued on the golf course as she and her husband Tom shared many rounds of golf together. She was an active member of the Austin Area Ladies Golf Association and supported her husband with his activities in the Austin Seniors Golf Association. They were a familiar presence at the Marshall's tent at Onion Creek Golf Course during the years that the Legends of Golf was played there.
Our mother taught by example, encouragement and empowerment. The currency of her life was love and her vault was both abundant and available. She invested extravagantly and wisely. There was nothing that could separate us from that love. Although we certainly from time to time felt that we had disappointed her, she showed us how we could turn those times into growth opportunities. She was able to see the good in everyone and help her students, friends and family learn the power of redemption.
Although her presence, which was always palpable, will be missed here on this earth, her legacy of love will live on through the generations to come.
