Dorothy Mae Howard, 95, a resident of Austin for over 51 years, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022. Born Dorothy Mae Oberg June 25, 1927, to Dolores (Groves) Oberg and Chester W. Oberg; she grew up in Salina Kansas along with her brother Bob and two sisters Viola and Helen.
Dorothy, who has been a long-standing member of the University Christian Church, was given the honorary title of Church Deacon.
As a teenager, during World War Il, she began a lifelong correspondence with Doreen Matthews, a teenager in Bristol England. Doreen and her husband Erm became the God-parents for Dorothy's firstborn. Later, Dorothy and her husband visited Doreen and Erm in England; Doreen and Erm in turn were hosted in America.
Dorothy, the granddaughter of a Spanish American War veteran Sergeant Kirkland U.S.A., met and fell in love with Lieutenant Roy Warren Howard U.S.A.F. when Roy visited Salina to pay respects to his father's old Spanish American War buddy.
The marriage of Roy W. Howard and Dorothy M. Oberg in 1948 began a three-quarter century of Dorothy as the matriarch of the Howard family. She is survived by three children: Michael D. Howard married to Cynthia E. Snyder living in Austin Texas, Janis L. Howard married to Brad Williams living in Hutto Texas, and Randall W. Howard married to Cheryl Fuchs living in Burton Texas. Eleven grandchildren; Erik Howard married to Michele Schacht in Seguin Texas, Roy Howard married to Bobbi Morrison in New Bern North Carolina, Ryan Howard in Sumter South Carolina, Sarah Millet married to Larry Millet in Oak Ridge Tennessee, Austin Williams in New York, Ross Williams married to Christina Hlavaty in Dallas Texas, Chad Williams in Portland Oregon, Joanna Williams in Austin Texas, Kristina Howard married to Ben Lewis in Brenham, Joshua Howard married to Allison Everette in Brenham Texas, Chelsea Howard married to Brent Michalak in Burton Texas. 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-grandson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Roy Howard U.S.A.F (retired) and son, Roy Patrick Howard who was married to Claudia Hobson.
As an Air Force Wife, Dorothy traveled throughout the United States from California to Georgia and many places in between: Arkansas, Nebraska, and Texas. One highlight was a three-year tour at Torrejon Air Force Base, Madrid, Spain. From Madrid, Dorothy was able to visit much of Europe, North Africa, and the Far East.
In addition to her dedication as a military wife and mother, her heritage enabled her to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Dorothy had a full and adventuresome life of family and travel. Her love to all she met, influence for good, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Dorothy and Roy, her husband of 57 years (deceased 2005), will be entombed together in San Antonio, Texas at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in a family ceremony at l :00 p.m. December 23, 2022.
