Our beloved mother and grandmother went home peacefully on December 6th after a long, courageous battle. Dottie was born the fifth of nine children on August 25, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland. After high school, she began her career as a Bell telephone operator and met her life-long best friend, Erma Placzkowski. The friendship they built and the love of Erma's family were the foundation of Mom's beliefs in how she loved and nurtured her family.
In 1959, she married Ronald F. McKay and moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she started her family, always striving to instill the best qualities in her children. Mom was a true believer in hard work, honesty, respect, perseverance and consideration for others. Mom lived in Chicago for over 45 years and eventually retired from AT&T.
Her health became an issue when it was determined that she would have to begin renal dialysis. This lasted four and a half years, but she always took excellent care of herself. In June of 1999 she was informed she would receive a kidney transplant at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. For this we would like to express our undying gratitude to Nicholas Matthew. His beautiful gift allowed her to share 13 more extraordinary years with her family. We would also like to convey our appreciation to the Transplant Coordination Team in Madison for all of the exemplary care and encouragement they gave her. In her gratitude, she made sure that she took exceptional care of her gift. In 2003, she moved to Lakeway, Texas to be closer to her beloved family.
She is preceded in death by her mother Barbara, her father Albert, and her siblings Barbara, John, Carroll, Edward, and Joseph. She is survived by her children Mary Mullins of Pensacola, Florida, Ronald McKay (Colleen) of North Dighton, Massachusetts, Lisa Webb (Tom), of Lakeway, Texas, and Leigh Ann Toste (Carlos) of Lexington, South Carolina. She was a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren: Jeremy, Kate, Dean, Riley, Kassidy, Samantha, Nathan, and two great-grand children Faryn and Bailey. She is survived by her sister Mary Cutler (Murray), her brothers Albert Severn (Beverly) and William Severn, her niece Carol Lynn Williams (Carol Lee), her nephew Michael Cutler (Gwen), her great-nephew Evan and her great-nieces Michelle and Meaghan. Dottie was a dear friend to many and touched more lives than can be listed here.
Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. with services following at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 11th at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis, Lakeway, Texas.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The National Kidney Foundation (www.nkft.org).
