Doris Goosby Hutton passed from this earth on May 2, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born in Comanche County on April 1, 1921. She will be remembered fondly by all that knew her as an avid gardener, an educator, a lover of children and animals, a cook and a philosopher. As to her gardening, an article written about her stated "Mrs. Hutton can be found working in her yard four or five hours a day year round. Her beautiful yard is a place where many Allandale residents stop and visit with Mrs. Hutton and with each other." She received her Masters Degree in music from the University of Texas at Austin after doing her undergraduate work at Daniel Baker College in Brownwood, Texas. She worked in several small Texas towns as a teacher before moving to Austin to continue her education. She worked for the Austin Public Schools for 18 years first as a classroom teacher and then music and ultimately music and art. Her adventure into art began after a musical production where she and the children produced beautiful backdrops for their musical presentation. The principal of the school decided she would return the next year as a music/ art teacher. Feeling she knew nothing about art she began her art education at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico that lasted for 9 consecutive summers. She became a Master Weaver and created many beautiful tapestries. She also became a water color artist. Her trips to Mexico instilled a deep love of the country and the people. Those experiences influenced her life and thoughts from her very first visit. The University of Texas at Austin became aware of her art teaching and artisan skills, hiring her to teach in the UT Art Department that lasted for 21 years.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Allen Quillin Hutton, her parents John C. and Annie J. Goosby, her sisters Anne Goosby and Betty Lutz Griswold. She is survived by her daughter Jo Faith Howard and her husband Randall Howard of Houston, Texas, her sisters Jo Liston of Harlingen and Nancy Travis Talley of Killeen, Texas, her grandsons Ronald Howard of Houston, Texas and Steven Howard of Fort Worth, Texas as well as 3 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to her special friends Glen Hellums, Ken Esperum, Emma Lea Mayton, Laura Hanson, and Linda and Gerard Alcala for their time and support of Doris.
Her words of wisdom from the article previously mentioned were "Be kind to everyone you meet. Their sorrows may be greater than you know. Always have little friends, friends your age and friends a little older than you. Having friends of all ages brings me great joy."
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
