Donald (Don) E. Gresser died February 15, 2011. He was born to share crop parents, H.B. and Emma (Schneider) Gresser on September 12, 1925 near Fayetteville, Texas (Fayette County). He attended Fayetteville Public Schools and graduated as Valedictorian of his class in 1943. After a short stint as a student at George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, California, he returned to Texas and “joined the Navy”. He served as a navy medical corpsman with the Fleet Marine Force from anti-aircraft battalion to marine infantry assault platoon from the Solomon Islands to Okinawa and China. He returned to the USA in 1946. On April 7, 1946, he married Gladys Schultz.
He was a long time member of VFW Post 8787 of Austin and American Legion Post 83 of Austin. He served as a volunteer for the Lone Star Girl Scout Council as a member for over 40 years and as the Finance Committee Chairman and Council President. He was awarded the “Thank You” badge in 1975 which at the time, was the highest Girl Scout award for a volunteer.
He served as an agent for Allstate Insurance Company where he was known for his product knowledge and integrity. He retired after over 35 yrs of service.
He and Gladys loved to travel and made trips to Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe, Spain, Portugal and many places in the United States.
He will be remembered for his jokes, puns and incredible memory for dates, places and times as well as his generosity and being a good neighbor.
He was preceded in death by parents H.B. and Emma Gresser; father and mother in-law Herbert and Olga Schultz; Sister Eleanor and husband Jesse Bruton Jr.; and brother and sister-in-law Harold and Dorothy Schultz. He is survived by his loving wife and companion of over 64 years, Gladys; son Richard (Rick) Gresser and wife Carol (Attra) Gresser of Austin; grandson Steven (Steve) Gresser and wife Trisha and their children Kate and Gavin of Austin; granddaughter Regina (Gina) Rahn and husband Scott of Pflugerville and their sons Kyle and Justin; Daughter Diana Williamson Almaraz and husband Robert of Georgetown; Sister Grace Gresser Bruce and husband Lelton (Bob) of Bellville; brother in-law Arlen Schultz and wife Franny of Florida and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Austin, Faith Lutheran Church of Austin or a charity of your choice.
