Dessa Mae McGee, a radiant light in the lives of all who knew her, was born on March 26, 1942, in Thorndale, Texas, to the late Joe and Odessa Williams. On Saturday, April 5, 2025, she peacefully entered into eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength.
From a young age, Dessa embraced her faith and was baptized at Mount Zion Baptist Church in her hometown. Her spiritual foundation would guide her throughout a life filled with generosity, resilience, and joy.
Known for her unmatched work ethic and vibrant personality, Dessa found her calling in the kitchen. She served as the head cook at the Officers Club at Bergstrom Air Force Base, where she nourished both stomachs and souls with her delicious meals and warm spirit. She also worked at Travis State School, where she built lasting friendships that stood the test of time—proof of the deep connections she created wherever she went.
In 1988, Dessa found true love and companionship in Lenard McGee Jr. Their marriage was filled with joy, devotion, and shared dreams until his passing in 1996. Though their time together was brief, their bond remained a bright light in her heart.
Dessa was the heartbeat of every family gathering—always the gracious host. She had a sharp wit, a love for laughter, and a playful spirit that made every moment with her feel special. She never passed up a good game of cards with family, a lively round of bingo with friends, or a chance to indulge in one of her favorite pastimes—shopping. Whether it was finding the perfect gift or treating herself to something special, Dessa knew how to enjoy life’s little pleasures.
Above all, she cherished time with her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she deeply loved spending time with her siblings—sharing stories, laughter, and the unbreakable bond they built over a lifetime together. Her relationships with her brothers and sisters were among her greatest joys, and she held them close to her heart every day.
She is now reunited in peace with her husband, Lenard McGee Jr.; her son, Christopher Hall; her parents, Joe and Odessa Williams; her brothers, Joe Williams Jr. and Richard Williams; and her sister, Mattie Deary.
Her beautiful legacy lives on through her loving children: Sylvia Martin of Pflugerville, TX; Karen Davis (Antonio) of Hutto, TX; and Patrick Hall Sr. of Austin, TX. She is also survived by her beloved sister Ruby Mitchell (Alvin) of Austin, TX; and brother Freddie Williams (Virginia) of Austin, TX.
Her light continues to shine in her grandchildren: Tieshannon White, Patrick Hall Jr., Kimberly Griffin, Branden Martin, Kayla Martin, Caleb Davis, Antonia Davis, and Malik Hall; and great-grandchildren: Kalik Hall and Savannah Griffin. She is also lovingly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Dessa Mae McGee lived her life with open arms, a giving heart, and a sparkle that will never be forgotten. Though we will miss her dearly, we celebrate the beautiful soul she was and the countless memories she gifted us along the way.
