Delbert Lee Sanders, 80, of Austin passed away on the 30th of September 2010 in Austin. He was born on the 29th of January 1930 in Liberty Hill, Texas to Sam and Roberta Beth “R.B.” Sanders. He lived in Austin all of his life where he attended public schools. He met his wife, Lavergne Roberts at the age of 17 and was married on May 7, 1948. They were happily married for 62 years. Delbert served in the US Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. In Korea, he was attached to the military police guarding trains. Later, he was transferred back to Hokaido, Japan as a snow ski instructor. After separation from active duty, he served six years in the in-active reserves, receiving his honorable discharge.
Delbert was an iron worker for 32 years and a member of United Iron Workers, Local 482. As a foreman, he helped build many of the State and The University of Texas buildings. After retirement, he opened D & L Marine Boat Company. After selling this company, he opened The Fishing Center, selling fishing supplies and tackle. It was a favorite coffee hangout for many local fisherman and was affectionately called “The Candy Store.” He also belonged to several Bass Clubs and held several offices, including President of the Capital Bass Club in 1975. He won many trophies, including Fisherman of the Year. After retirement, he spent many happy years fishing with his wife and friends in Port Mansfield.
He is survived by his wife, Lavergne Sanders; daughter, Sandra Carlson; granddaughter, Erin Carlson; his brother, Wesley Sanders and his wife, Shirley; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Delbert Lee Sanders, Jr., and his sister, Jewel Benner. The family wants to thank his physician, Dr. Mary Maxwell and her staff, Gracy Woods II nurses and aids, and the Lighthouse Hospice of both Georgetown and Austin.Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening on Sunday, the 3rd of October 2010, in the Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin.The funeral service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 4th of October 2010, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Austin Memorial Park, Austin, Texas.
