Lifelong Premont resident David Muñoz, 79, passed away on July 19, 2017, the result of unexpected complications that arose after surgery. He spent his last days in Round Rock, Texas, where he was taken to be closer to his loved ones.
Muñoz, who was a 1956 Premont High School graduate and a former Marine, retired from the United States Postal Service in 1992 after a 36-year career. He served the last 18 years as Postmaster of the Premont post office, where he held the distinction of being the first person of Hispanic descent to earn that position.
In addition to his Postal Service career, Muñoz was an accomplished farmer and rancher. He greatly enjoyed spending time tending his crops and his many citrus trees. He was known among family and friends for the gifts of oranges, tangerines and grapefruit he harvested each year. Muñoz loved seeing things grow, whether plants or livestock, and these, along with his wife, children and grandchildren, brought him great peace and happiness.
Muñoz is preceded in death by his father, Flavio; mother, Dominga; and brothers Silvestre, Flavio and Ricardo. He is survived by his loving wife Anabel Cuellar Muñoz, along with his son David and daughters Evelyn Salgado and husband Jerry; Patricia Zamora and husband Rick; and Pearly Jo Oglesby and husband Chris. Grandchildren include Jay Salgado, Gabrielle Muñoz, Joshua Muñoz, Che Salgado, Beck Salgado, Xander Zamora and Chloe Zamora. He is additionally survived by his brother Humberto and wife Aminta, and his sisters Mary Galindo and Lupe Cardenas, along with her husband Oscar.
A memorial service, followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on August 12, 2017. The service will be held in the chapel of the Funeraria Del Angel/Howard-Williams, 1208 South St. Mary, Falfurrias, Texas.
