David Roger Lloyd, 84, went to be with the Lord on April 19, 2021 after a 14 year long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on October 12, 1936 in Pecos, Texas to Alvin and Goldie Lloyd. He is preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Lila Lloyd along with his brothers, Keith Lloyd, Joel Lloyd, and Conrad Lloyd. Dave and his wife lived in Midland for 50 years where he ran his TV shop Dave’s TV for over 20 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Golf Course Road Church of Christ where he and Lila enjoyed attending the Prime Timer’s class. Thanksgiving of 2019 Lila experienced a seizure while visiting family in Austin and she and Dave have lived with their children in Austin since that time.
David grew up in Pecos, Texas the son of a barber and his stay at home mom, who kept busy raising 4 boys and a girl. Stories of the Lloyd Boys’ shenanigans were notorious throughout Pecos.Dad often shared that he was the fastest kid in Pecos. He liked to share what broken Spanish he learned over the years. He began playing the violin at age 12 and eventually attended Texas Western College on a music scholarship. He left college to join the Army.
He joined the army in 1957 and spent time in Germany where he trained to become a Radar Technician. He loved Germany and was stationed there at the same time as his favorite musician Elvis Presley, although he never got to meet him, he saw him perform. He brought back his Volkswagen Beetle, and loved to share what little German he knew with family and often talked about going back.
In 1963 he met his wife, Lila Lloyd, a teacher in Pecos whose student had set her up on a blind date with him. They were married a few short months later and were together for 57 years until Lila passed. They truly lived a fairy tale marriage. They only spent a handful of days apart from one another in all those years. You could always find her giving a loving glance at Dave, and they still held hands, kissed, and made sure to tell each other “I love you”. They both called each other, “Honey” and loved one another with every part of their being. We know that they are reunited and in each other’s arms in heaven and dad is once again enjoying mom’s loving glance.
He is survived by his children Floyd Lloyd, Darletta Jaycox, Darrell Lloyd, and Paul Lloyd of Austin, Texas, Mike Lloyd and his wife Erin Lloyd of Midland, Texas, and grandchildren, Katie and Lukas Koube of Atlanta, Georgia, Amber & Meagan Jaycox of Austin Texas, Alex Jaycox of Abilene, Texas, Caleb Lloyd of Midland, Texas, as well as his nephew/honorary son Edmund Lloyd and wife Veverly of San Marcos, Texas and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his brother Don Lloyd and wife Sarah of Orlando, Florida as well as his sister Gloria Youngblood and her husband Wilton of Midland, Texas. We would also like to show our gratitude to his caregiver Grace Sarr who was an absolute lifesaver watching over David and Lila while their children were at work. She treated both David and Lila like family and the Lloyds are eternally grateful for her dedication and compassion.
He will be buried at Fort Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at a small graveside service with family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in his honor.
David loved Ham Radio, his call sign was WA5SMQ and he even used it in the military. Over the years he made many lifelong friends. In ham radio, they used the code 73’s as an ending greeting after a conversation. So it feels appropriate to end with two of his favorite expressions, Adios and 73’s!
