David Glenn Cooke Jr., 93, a fourth-generation Austinite, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2017, surrounded by family. Glenn was born on November 15, 1924, at the old Seton Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, David G. Cooke Sr. and Sarah Parmele Cooke, as well as his son Robert.
Glenn took great pride in his Central Texas heritage; he loved to tell stories of adventures with his many cousins on the family farm in Granger. Some of his favorite memories were of growing up in early 20th-century Austin. He graduated from Austin High and was a starting tackle on the 1942 state championship football team, earning All-State honors.
When World War II broke out, Glenn enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in California; there he met Louise Davis. They were wed on May 18, 1945, and were married for over 72 years. After the war, the young couple moved to Austin, where Glenn earned a business degree from the University of Texas. He went to work in the freight industry, and Glenn and Louise soon found a home in the newly-developed Crestview subdivision. They became very active charter members of Crestview United Methodist Church, both serving as Cub Scout leaders while raising their four children.
In his retirement, Glenn continued his lifelong passion for hunting and fishing. He was never without a hobby in any season of his life -- from traveling to Alaska, square dancing with Louise, and gardening in his backyard to taking up knife-making at the age of 90.
He is survived by his wife, Louise, and children, Elaine Hettenhausen; Diane and husband, David Broll; and David and wife, Cay; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren (with two on the way); and sisters, Helen Anderson and Bernice Ferguson.
