David William Applewhite, age 55, of Austin Texas, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022. David’s life was too short but lived to its fullest. David was a husband, father, friend, businessman, teacher, intellectual, traveler, music enthusiast, bass player, beard grower, and Colorado hiker. He challenged himself and everyone he knew to question and explore their comfort levels and abilities. He met all of the challenges in his life with bravery, love and an attitude of service to others.
David was born in Spokane, Washington on January 6, 1967, and moved to Fort Worth in middle school. David attended Southwest High School, and then earned a degree in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma, and an MBA from Georgetown University.
David’s career had many chapters that reflect his broad interests and expertise. He began his career with Tondu Corporation and Nortel Networks pursuing energy and communications projects in Asia and the Pacific Northwest. When his first child was born, David left the corporate world to spend time with his family and eventually teach.
David was a devoted teacher and a mentor at San Juan Diego High School in Austin Texas. His focus was environmental science, but his teaching went well beyond the classroom as he traveled with the Venture Crew and shared his enthusiasm for the wonders of our world.
David was blessed to experience true love with his wife Monica. Throughout their marriage of 27 years they shared their passion for travel, music, and culture. They gifted this love of travel to their children with whom they traveled with to places such as Eastern Europe, Australia, Bali, and Tanzania. Throughout his lifetime, David explored over 68 countries.
David is survived by his wife Monica and their children, Tory and Nick, his mother Tiana Applewhite, and sisters Missy and Vicky. He is preceded in death by his father, William (Bill) Applewhite.
