Clayton Wells Wimberly, 26, passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2016. Clayton was born October 3, 1989 in Austin, Texas. He is survived by his: parents Steve & Nancy Wimberly; brother Turner Wimberly; sister Laura (Lulu) Wimberly; loyal dog Rowdy; extended family; and a host of wonderful lifelong friends.
Clayton graduated from Westlake High School in 2008, where he was a two-year letterman on the varsity football team. He then went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Texas Tech University. Clayton was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity where he served numerous officer positions, but was particularly proud and fond of his time as “Tailgate Chair” because he loved hanging out with his friends around the BBQ pit and teaching the younger kids how to barbecue. At Westlake High School and Texas Tech, Clayton made numerous close friends. He loved these friends dearly and maintained a close relationship with many of them for the remainder of his life.
After graduating from Texas Tech, Clayton returned home to Austin and committed his focus and energy to the family pecan business, eventually taking over management of the orchards. In his time managing the orchards, Clayton set in motion a plan to revamp the systems and processes used to grow pecans in the orchards in order to realign them with the most cutting edge agricultural and horticultural practices used anywhere in the world. Over the last few years, he worked tirelessly growing some of the best pecans in the world, and phasing in his ultimate vision for the pecan farm.
Clayton was fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend a great deal of time with his 4 loving grandparents. He spent much of his childhood at the farm between rows of pecan trees learning from his grandfather and namesake Othal Clayton Wimberly, and enjoying the wonderful cooking of his doting grandmother Doris Wimberly who loved him dearly. He shared a passion for music with his Grandfather, Jack Mize, with whom he starred in many “concerts,” organized and catered by his grandmother, Ann Mize during holidays and family gatherings.
Clayton loved to hunt, fish and spend time with friends. He was a gifted athlete from a young age, a skilled guitar player, the barbecue pit master, and an animal lover. His sense of humor was unlike any other, and brought comfort and laughter to his family and friends every day. He was a loving son, a devoted brother and a fiercely loyal friend. We loved him with no boundaries and will remember and miss him forever.
There will be a Memorial Service to share and celebrate Clayton’s life on Thursday, May 11th at Pecan Springs Ranch, located at 10601 Derecho Dr., Austin, TX, 78737. The memorial will start at 11:00 AM, followed by a BBQ lunch and social gathering in Clayton’s honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Clayton’s memory to the Austin Sunshine Camps: www.sunshinecamps.org.
