Cheryl Briggs Patton of Austin passed away on Christmas Day, 2010. She was born on February 6, 1949, in Houston, Texas and was the daughter of Mel and Hazel Briggs. She graduated from Bellaire High School, Houston, in 1967 and from The University of Texas at Austin in 1971 earning a degree in Home Economics. Cheryl was member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. After graduating from UT, Cheryl taught in the Austin Independent School District at Travis and Bowie High Schools retiring after 30 years.
Married for 39 years, Cheryl and Pat Patton lived in the Onion Creek area of Austin for the past 31 years. Cheryl was active in the Onion Creek Club Ladies Association, the Onion Creek Gourmet Cooking Club, and water aerobics. Cheryl was also a member of the Austin Junior Forum and volunteered for many charitable organizations including fundraising events for the Susan G. Komen, Austin Chapter.
Cheryl was diagnosed with breast cancer in March, 2006. Even though she fought a long and courageous battle, the disease returned in March, 2010. Through it all, Cheryl would not let the disease interfere with life.
Along with her loving husband, Pat, to mourn her loss, is her brother, Lee Briggs and wife Rita of Atlanta and their children, Jami and David. Billy and Carol Hellums from San Francisco, Pat's brother and his wife will miss her, too. Cheryl leaves behind a host of close family and friends in Austin and throughout the United States, England and Germany. She will be remembered as a warm, caring, and generous woman who was loved by many.
A memorial service will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
