Charlie Lee Townsend

Charlie Lee Townsend of Austin, Texas passed from this life on February 23, 2023 at the age of 95. Charlie was born on October 12, 1927, to Frank and Ethel Northcott Townsend in Thrall, Texas. He attended Friendship High School and true to the name, maintained lifelong friendships with his classmates. In fact, Charlie would spend the rest of his life forming lifelong bonds every step of the way and never met a stranger. After graduating high school, he moved to Austin to continue his education at the University of Texas before going to work for Southern Union Gas Company where he retired at a youthful 59. Like the friendships Charlie made in school, he continued to maintain close relationships with co-workers, getting together to reminisce about the good old days and catch up on their lives. Most of the time this was around a good meal.

Charlie was a dedicated member of his community. He was an active member of the Cameron Road Church of Christ since 1973 and felt very blessed to be part of such a wonderful church family. He was an active member of the Northeast Austin Lions Club serving in many capacities including president. He volunteered his time by spending countless hours delivering food for Meals on Wheels. Being raised on a farm, Charlie never grew tired of gardening and caring for animals. He took great pride in designing and maintaining his yard and he loved caring for his chickens. Charlie had an affinity for travelling, always with family and friends. He grew quite fond of Switzerland after visiting many times, and in true Charlie fashion, he made lasting friendships along the way.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ethel Townsend and his sister Ruby Townsend Fulcher. He is survived by his nephew Larry Fulcher and his wife Carol, his niece Sharon Humphrey and her husband Royce, his great nieces, Chrissy Ferguson and her husband Michael Ferguson, Shannan Humphrey, Lacey Humphrey, great nephew Chad Fulcher and wife Jenny, as well as cousins.

Services will be held at the Cook-Walden Funeral Home on 6100 North Lamar, Austin, Texas 78752 on February 28, 2023, with the Visitation from 9:00am-10:00am and Funeral at 10:00am. The burial will be at the Taylor Cemetery in Taylor, Texas at 2:00pm.
