Charlie was born at Carnegie, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1938 to Charles and Elizabeth (Schultz) Slack. After his father died when Charlie was just 8 years old, his mother made the wise decision to send him to Girard College, a boarding school for orphaned boys. Charlie always credited his mother with making what turned out to be a wise decision, because the education he received at Girard College set him on a path that led to a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a successful career as a Research Engineer with the University of Texas that spanned over 45 years. He felt that he “never worked a day in his life” because he loved his job, the challenges that it presented, and the people he got to know.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Elizabeth Slack. He is survived by his wife Jan Slack and his children Carrie Ann Slack and Darrel Slack. He also leaves to cherish his memory three stepchildren - Meg (Paul) Dixon, Eric (Christy) Murray, and Jonathan Murray, and two stepgranddaughters, Emma Dixon and Lauren Murray.
Charlie will always be remembered as the guy who could fix any car, knew almost everything there is to know about cars, could repair anything electrical, but didn’t like to fix plumbing problems. He was a kind and supportive father to his children, and was the love of his wife’s life.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Memorial remembrances may be made to the Texas Wendish Heritage Society, 1011 CR 212, Giddings, Texas, or to the charity of one’s choice.
