32,370 days Grandpa, just 32,370 days. It is easy to count the days you were with us, but as I sit down to express our sadness, gratitude and share your story… I am finding it difficult to put it down on paper. We can measure how long you have been with us, but we could never measure what you brought to our lives. God blessed us with you on November 21st, 1925 and you left a lasting mark on our hearts that continues although he called you back to heaven on August 1st, 2014.
Grandpa, you left this world the same way you lived: stubborn, brilliant, a little goofy and a hopeless romantic. It isn't any wonder that your impact came in the world of innovation. You loved to learn, invent and push the limits of what we already knew to be true.
You began your curiosity in the Boy Scouts of America as a small boy and eventually earned an Eagle Scout ranking in 1943. Your appreciation to the organization led you to becoming an executive board member of the Capital Area Council for Boy Scouts of America, win the Award for outstanding service to scouting and to chair the 1970 together plan. You continued your quest for knowledge by dedicating yourself to your Country in World War II. As a Motor Machinist in the Navy, you quickly realized your strengths. Unstoppable and hungry for more, you continued your passion for innovation and joined IBM in 1946 in their customer engineer trainee program.
Virginia Faerber came into your life in the fall of 1947. From the moment you laid eyes on her you were smitten. The stubbornness and sense of humor she grew to love showed her that an inch is just enough to start a 66 year marriage. Throughout it all your love remained strong and unbreakable. You shared career successes and elation with the birth of 3 children and persevered through alcoholism and the death of your son, Bruce. No matter what, your marriage to Virginia was one of partnership and dedication. Grandma stood by you and guided you to the path of AA, a feat you cherished and remained in awe of her for until her passing just a short week ago. When Grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, you never left her side. You showed all of us the true meaning of love and devotion Grandpa. You were the man of all our dreams, the conscious we admire, the innovator we aspire to be and the heart we miss already.
Your son John Muller, your daughter Debbie Muller Linn, your 6 grandchildren, your 4 great-grandchildren and your friends will gather together on August 8th, 2014 at 3:00pm at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Austin, TX to celebrate your life.
We wish you and Grandma the forever of happiness you both deserve.
Love always your granddaughter, little Virginia
