Carolyn Porter Wright passed away on December 15, 2011 in Austin, Texas. She was born on August 25, 1927 to Morgan and Gladys Guynes Porter in Mathis, Texas. This tough South Texas farm girl, affectionately known as "Murr" by her family, met the love of her life on a blind date while attending The University of Texas. That blind date began a romance that lead to a 64-year marriage to Robert (Bob) S. Wright, D.C., and three children, Sue Alison, Robert Jr. (Bobby), and James William (Billy).
Carolyn was a teacher for several years in San Antonio, while Bob attended Texas Chiropractic College. After Bob's graduation, they moved to Austin to make it their forever home. Carolyn and Bob have been active members of Hyde Park Baptist Church for nearly forty years, serving as leaders and teachers in their Sunday School department. Carolyn will be remembered for the contributions of her famous baskets of cheese straws to the annual Senior Adult Department auction fundraiser.
Being the master of her kitchen, Murr was always trying a new recipe. She used to say that the Porter family "didn't eat to live, but lived to eat". You could always expect to find something sweet to eat whenever you visited her home. Murr shared the secrets and techniques of "fluffy" white icing, pecan pralines, and banana bread with her granddaughters.
Carolyn and Bob have followed their children and grandchildren in any and every sport, attending as many football, baseball, basketball games, volleyball and tennis matches, track meets, and dance recitals as they could work into their schedule. Then, there were the Preschool plays, lunches on Grandparent's day, and choir performances that they never missed.
Carolyn loved her family, her Sunday School department, and her bridge and sewing buddies.
Carolyn is survived by her loving and devoted husband Bob, their children and spouses Sue Peschel and Randy, Bobby and Mary Wright, Billy and Suzy Wright. Murr was proud of her grandchildren: Ali Peschel Patterson (Lucas), Melissa Peschel Smith (Patrick), Amanda Wright, Ran Peschel (Whitney), Rebecca Wright, Tyler and Tanner Wright. But she was even more delighted with each of her five great-grandchildren: Ella, Hattie, Mary Carolyn, Hodges and Cotton.
The family will receive visitors Monday, December 19th between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Hyde Park Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 20th at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hyde Park Baptist Church Food Pantry, Texas Baptist Children's Home, or a charity of your choice.
