Carole was born in Miami, Florida on September 16, 1948, to Louis and Ethel Lertzman. She grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was active in her local synagogue and Jewish youth group, and excelled in music, playing both the stringed bass and piano. Carole graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1966 and went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Cincinnati. She began her career teaching special education in Cleveland.
It was in Cleveland that Carole met Fred Sternberg, and after a brief courtship, they married in 1972. The couple relocated to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1974 where they launched Fred's podiatry practice. Carole's roles in the practice were many, ranging from front desk reception and office management to accounting and insurance processing to chairside surgery assistance. Her most cherished role would begin a year later with the arrival of twin boys, Lawrence and Todd.
Carole and Fred worked side by side for four decades until their joint retirement in 2013. In 2016, they happily relocated to Austin to be closer to their sons and grandchildren. Retirement brought Carole the opportunity to indulge in her many hobbies, including brain puzzles, reading, knitting, and the occasional game of chance.
Carole is survived by her husband, Fred; sons, Lawrence (Sara) and Todd (Marissa); grandchildren, Max, Skylar, Abe, and Dot; and nieces, Elizabeth Goldreich and Katy Wolff.
A service to celebrate Carole's life will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated in Carole's memory to either Shalom Austin or the Special Olympics.
