Carla Marie Jennings, 86, of Austin, Texas, passed away, March 11, 2019, surrounded by family. After living many years with dementia, she is finally at peace. She was born March 31, 1932, in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Arthur “Art” Telford Mahan and Marta Linnea Larson. Carla graduated from Galena Park High School in Houston, Texas, and later attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for several years. She married the late Gordon Lanier Jennings in 1962 and they lived together in Houston, Texas for forty years. After Gordon passed in 2002, she moved to Querencia at Barton Creek in Austin to be near family.
Carla is survived by her sister, Lynn Carlile of Colorado Springs, four children: Alan Jennings of Colorado Springs; Susan Cummings and Karin Schneider of Austin; and Liane Platt of Lake Jackson. She is also survived by seven grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Scott and Amanda Cummings of Austin, Kaley, Jenna and Brett Schneider of Austin, and Sydney and Morgan Platt of Lake Jackson. Carla was predeceased by her loving husband, Gordon; father and mother, Art and Marta Mahan; and brother Richard Mahan.
Carla was a skilled artist, avid reader, loved to do puzzles, crafter, gardener, and financial whiz. She was a stay at home mom for nearly 20 years while her kids were young and then became an Office Administrator for Barnett & Casbarian in Houston for many years. She was the cornerstone of the family always putting other’s needs before her own. She was an excellent role model and mother for her children to follow.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel in the Plaza at Querencia at Barton Creek, 2500 Barton Creek Blvd, in Austin. Chaplain Dean Smith from Halcyon Home Health & Hospice, LLC will officiate.
The family would appreciate any donations in support of The Darrell K. Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease (dkrfund.org), in lieu of sending flowers.
