Calloway Seale Crews, age 88, former resident of Austin and Kyle, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the Stonebridge Health Center in Austin. Cal was born March 31, 1924 in Karnes County, Texas to Nona Seale Crews and S.E. Crews, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Steven and Jack Crews; and his sister, Francis Hanson.
Cal is survived by his brothers, David Crews of Conroe and Pat Crews of Graham, as well as his sisters, Nonanell Kendrick of Boerne and Doris Puryear of Dumas, AR. Cal is also survived by his three sons, Ken Crews of McAllen, Bill Crews (Susan) of Austin, and Mike Crews (Becky) of Lexington, KY, as well as three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Cal graduated from Karnes City High School and served in the invasion of Okinawa and in China with the U.S. Marine Corp during WW II. After the war, he graduated from Baylor University where he played halfback on the football team during the 1947 season before suffering a career-ending knee injury. Cal went on to be a teacher and football coach in Clifton, Karnes City and Round Rock. He worked for several years for the Texas Employment Commission, and he also owned and operated several small businesses during his lifetime.
He was active in the Kyle community, serving as a Scoutmaster and participating in civic efforts to benefit the city of Kyle, the Kyle Community Library, and the Hays Consolidated School District. He was also active in several civic efforts to benefit his hometown of Karnes City and Karnes County.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stonebridge for their excellent care and devotion to Cal over the last years of his life. We would also like to give a special thanks to Crystal with Odyssey Hospice for her kindness and care as Cal neared the end of his life.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 30, 2012 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home located at 6300 W. William Cannon Drive. A private interment will be at the Karnes City Cemetery at a later date.
