Bill Bailey Cox, age 86, a lifelong native Austenite passed away May 19, 2015 from a short battle with cancer. He was born at home on Holley St. and attended Metz Elementary, Fulmore Middle School, and Austin High School. He also attended Southwestern Bible Institute Junior College in Waxahachie, Texas.
He was drafted into the Army in 1950, during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska. Upon returning to Austin, he was a self-employed entrepreneur. He owned several glass businesses, including Austin Auto Glass, and service stations around South Austin. He owned and operated restaurants in downtown Austin called “The Viking House and The Brazos Café”. Prior to his retirement in 1995, he owned a book binding business. He was a Charter Member and past President of the Texas Old Time Fiddlers Association. Music was his passion and he began playing the Fiddle when he was 5 years old. He played in school orchestras, churches, bands, and contests all over Texas. He was a member of Bannockburn Baptist Church and enjoyed many of the churches groups and activities. He considered them all very good friends and they were all wonderfully supportive of his struggles in the last months.
In 1955, he went on a 'first date' with Lorinda Prewitt and they were married three months later. They had two girls Anita and Karen. Before her death in 2006, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Gertrude Polvado Cox, and his brother George Cox. He is survived by his daughters Karen Cox, Anita and husband Neal Bouldin, grandchildren, Keegan Laney, Shawn Bouldin, Kim Boudin Britt, and Kaila Lozano; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Through this trying period, the family would like to thank Texas Oncology, many close friends from Bannockburn Baptist Church, the caring staff of Stonebridge Nursing Home, family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
