Barbara McAnally Winn (known as "Babs") died peacefully at age 90 on Thursday, September 21, 2017. She was born in 1927 in Fort Worth, Texas to Dr. Loyd McAnally and Martha Wall Texanna Cowley (known as "Diddie"). Babs moved to Austin in the late 1930s and graduated from Austin High School in 1944. During her first year at the University of Texas, she fell in love with Robert William Winn ("Windy Winn"), and they married in 1945. Babs and Windy were still happy together 56 years later, when Windy died in 2001.
It was local personality Cactus Pryor who introduced Babs to his high school buddy, Windy. Jake Pickle and Windy were partners in the 1950s, handling political and advertising campaigns. Babs and Windy had a lot of fun together. They were original "founding" members of Austin Civic Theater (now the Zachary Scott Theater). They acted, danced, sang, directed and wrote plays. Babs had a quick wit and playful sense of humor. Her life was very full, but the most important thing to Babs was to create a happy and secure home filled with love and laughter.
Babs cared about people and made friends easily. She had great empathy for the "under-dog" and those who weren't as fortunate as she was. As a volunteer in an adult literacy program, she taught adults how to read. After her daughters married and left home, Babs became a successful real estate agent.
Babs took great delight and remained an invigorating presence in the lives of her seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was especially close to her three daughters and the four women spent many nights together talking and laughing until the wee hours of the morning. This is what her girls will miss most.
Babs' final years were spent at Brookdale Northwest Hills where her caregivers treated her with love and attention. The family is also grateful to Brookdale Hospice for their tender care during her final months. Babs had the great ability to look at the bright side of any situation. No matter what happened in her life, her glass remained more than half full. She will be greatly missed and remembered with a beautiful smile and twinkle in her eyes.
Survivors include her daughters Cindy Winn Livingston and husband Stephen, Missy Winn Aicklen and husband Chad, and Jill Winn Hoffner and husband John. Her seven grandchildren are Mark Livingston and wife Katy, David Livingston and wife Sarah, Lissa Aicklen Hutchison and husband Craig, Stacy Aicklen Snavely and husband P.J., Kelly Frink Malek and husband Colby, Kate Hoffner and James Hoffner. Her great grandchildren are Trey Snavely, Lilly Hutchison, Lucy Livingston, Will Livingston, Annie Hutchison, Jane Livingston, Charlie Snavely, Sam Livingston, Winnie Kate Malek, Ellie Malek and Jimmy Malek.
A memorial service will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish, 3125 North Lamar on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 4:00 pm.
