Barbara Louise Challis, age 77, of Austin, Texas died on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 after a brief struggle with cancer. She was born April 24, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri to Harry Kenneth Payne and Ada Beatrice Brown.
Barbara was born in Missouri but she was raised in Bakersfield, California. She received her BA degree in Elementary Education from San Francisco State University, California in 1964. Barbara was a home maker, a mother, and dedicated wife to her husband who served in the United States Air Force. She loved supporting her husband's career and enjoyed all of their assignments to Maine, Germany, South Carolina, Japan, and Texas.
Barbara enjoyed traveling, golfing, bowling, playing cards, and spoiling her daughter and grandchildren. She was a wonderful artist that loved to paint and play the piano. Barbara was an avid bridge player and belonged to many different bridge clubs. She was also a member of the Retired Military Officer Wives Club (ROWC) and the Yoapon Garden Club. In 1980, Barbara moved to Texas where she learned to love country western dancing, bird watching, and the Austin Symphony.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Ford Foster Challis, III; and her parents.
Barbara is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lorianne and Richard Hayward; granddaughters, Amanda and Rachel Hayward; and many more loving relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Ave.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will be held at 2:30 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
