Barbara Ann Boardman, 81, passed away on January 29, 2010. She was born in Austin on October 26, 1928 to Harry and Annabelle Campbell. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, sister Phoebe Gladine Traweek, and brothers Marcus and James. She is survived by her children; Harry Boardman; Diana Marie and husband Jimmy Houston; James Preston Boardman IV and wife Sam; Susan Elaine and husband Alastair Black; and Roger Vincent Boardman. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Barbara was especially close to her cousin and lifelong friend, Juanita Fleming. A graduate of Austin High School, Barbara later attended Austin Community College and earned an Associate Degree in journalism. She was proud to have also attended the University of Texas at Austin. A charter member of the Austin Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club, Barbara enjoyed driving her 1923 Willys-Knight and participating in annual club tours held throughout Texas. Not only did she win trophies from driving events, she won many awards for her vintage clothing during the annual style shows. Barbara loved animals and she worked for many years as a veterinary assistant. The patients, and often their owners, adored her. Barbara later worked for the Office of the Attorney General and retired in 2000. Barbara loved being a Texan and one whose ancestors arrived during the Republic era. Fascinated by Texas history, she enjoyed visiting historic sites. She was also intensely proud of her Scottish heritage. In 1997, a special dream came true as she visited the highlands, lochs and castles of Scotland. With her many outside interests and pursuits, one particular challenge that was never met was cooking. Kitchens remained a mystery to Barbara. They were just rooms attached to a house. However, Barbara did master peach cobbler, for which we are eternally grateful. The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Emeritus at Beckett Meadows, especially the wonderful and caring individuals in the Memory Care Neighborhood. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Assumption Cemetery, 3650 IH 35 South, on Monday, February 15, at 2:00 PM. Nephew Richard Traweek will be the honorary urn bearer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Austin Humane Society, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or other organization of your choice.
