He was born October 2nd, 1928 in Graham, Texas to George Del Rey Smart and Frances Marie Burnett Smart. He attended schools in Graham and graduated in 1946. His favorite sports were tennis and archery, excelling at both. He served four years in the Air Force service most of his time in Japan with the U.S. Occupational Forces. After returning from the war he entered Texas Tech University, then the University of Texas, receiving degrees in Engineering and Business.
He is preceded in death by his parents George Del Rey and Frances Marie Smart, step daughter Charlene Carroll and step son David W. Carroll of Austin.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years Loraine Kaiser Smart, grandsons Adrian M. Carroll of Bozeman, Montana, Aaron Carroll of Austin and sister Dolores Smart of Houston, and his dear friends Peggy Macco, Nellie Carroll, Sally Harty, Margaret Kyser, Ron Kinney, Charlie Townsend, Nelda Meusse, Eunice and Linda Haller, Rhonda Cain and many family members and friends. Special thanks to the Rehab and Nursing Center and the River City Hospice of Austin, Dr. James Moncrief, and Armand’s Hospice Nurse, Noel.
He was in real estate for several years and owned Austin Radiation Works Inc. for 35 years where he held two patents. He was very active in scouting and had the largest accounting troop in Austin. He enjoyed raising cattle and sheep and had a peach orchard (400 trees) and managed an organic garden in Menard, Texas.
At the age of 12 he was baptized into the Church of Christ in Graham. He was confirmed with St. Martins Lutheran Church.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock to eight o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on 6100 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas.
A funeral service will be held at ten o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 at Cook-Walden funeral Home.
Interment will be on the family lot in Pioneer Cemetery, Graham, Texas.
