Angela Chao passed away in a tragic automobile accident on February 11, 2024, at the age of 50. Angela was a loving and devoted wife to her husband Jim Breyer and an equally loving and devoted daughter, sister, mother, and aunt, unfailingly filial, thoughtful, and kind. She was a friend to all who met her, with a wonderful sense of humor and a compassionate spirit. Her charisma was only exceeded by her intelligence and vision in business, philanthropy, and in life, and most especially, by her love for family and friends.
Angela believed deeply that the true treasures in life are family, friends, and helping others. Her spirit of love and compassion and charity will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Angela was Chair and CEO of Foremost Group, a leading New York charterer of large and eco-friendly bulk carriers. As a trail blazer for women in the executive suite, she inspired others to pursue their dreams. Her path to success in business began at a young age, when she would accompany her father, Dr. James S. C. Chao, founder of Foremost, to “Take Your Daughter to Work” days, even joining him on visits to the company’s ships.
Angela supported a wide range of educational, fine arts, health, and community organizations. She served on the Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors, and, in honor of her parents, she established the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao and James Si-Cheng Chao Family Fellowship at Harvard College. She served on the Chairman’s Council of the Metropolitan Museum of the Arts and as an Advisory Board Member of the Metropolitan Opera. She received her M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and an undergraduate degree in economics from Harvard College where she graduated magna cum laude in three years. While at Harvard Business School, she wrote a finance case entitled “Ocean Carriers” which is being used in the First Year Required Curriculum at Harvard Business School, as well as at other top business schools.
Angela is survived by her husband Jim Breyer, by her father Dr. James S.C. Chao, and by her sisters the Honorable Elaine Chao, May Chao, Christine Chao, and Grace Chao and extended family. Angela was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, and by her sister Jeanette Chao.
