Amada Amelia Sanchez passed away peacefully on July 15, 2018 with her family at her side. Amada was born in Cuba on January 5, 1920 and immigrated to the US in November 1960 with her daughter Barbara. Amada was preceded in death by her husband Rene Tapia, who served in the army.
She was born in Victoria de las Tunas, Cuba to Jesus Sanchez and Adela Rodriguez. She was the second oldest of eight children. She came to the United States with only the clothes on her back, her daughter and an amazing will to get ahead. With little formal education she worked two jobs as a seamstress and as a meat packer to make ends meet. She never remarried and raised her daughter as a single mom in New York City. Amada loved people and always had an espresso or cup of café con leche and a meal or two ready to serve. On the weekends, Amada prepared empanadas for a nearby restaurant to supplement her income and provide for her daughter. She was person of amazing grit and told people what was on her mind and those people, who were lucky enough to know her, loved her for her directness.
Amada is survived by her daughter and her husband Jeff, her grandchildren Amber and her husband Nick, Jorrel and her great grandson Weston.
