Alton Clinton White Jr.

Alton C. White, Jr. was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He also was good natured, thoughtful, charming, kind, generous, respectful, and a big tipper. Born on January 27, 1932 in Austin, Texas to Alton C. White, Sr. and Edith Stone White, he died on February 27, 2018 from complications of a fall at the age of 86.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1949 and in 1953, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas. Following graduation, Alton served two years in the U. S. Army. He worked for more than 30 years in the family business, Austin Blue Print Company, and after retiring, went into the oil business.

Alton was preceded in death by his business associate of 30 years, Ronald J. Byers. Together, they worked, laughed, played and roamed the world collecting exquisite objects and a fair amount of junk along the way. Alton’s and Ron’s stories about their travels are legend.

He was devoted to his parents. After his Mother’s death in 2002, Alton took his Dad to breakfast every morning followed by a trip to the cemetery so Mr. White could visit his dear Edith. These jaunts continued until Mr. White’s death in 2008.

An only child until the age of 6, Alton was fond of saying his parents already had a perfect child so why didn’t they stop there. Nonetheless, he was joined by a sister and brother, Pat and Richard. The siblings and their spouses, Ed and Minell, enjoyed weekly family dinners with Alton.

Alton is survived by sister Patricia White Keller and husband Ed of Austin; brother Richard J. White and wife Minell of Austin; nephews Mike White and wife Lisa and Christian J. White of Ohio; and grandnephews Austin and Evan White of Colorado.

He is also survived by Jorge Almeida of Mexico City and Alton’s personal assistant Steven Mitchelle of Austin - both were like sons to Alton; Steven’s wife Karen and their children Tessa and Jackson; his longtime housekeeper Rocio Ochoa and groundskeeper Gino Padron; and many loving and devoted friends too numerous to name.

Steven and Alton had breakfast every morning at Maudie’s on Lake Austin Boulevard. Their table was always set and, upon arrival, a bowl of guacamole and chips would immediately appear. All the Maudie’s staff loved Alton, and there were many hugs upon entering and departing each day!

If you only had one friend in this world and that friend was Alton White, you were a very lucky person. Alton had many friends who loved him, but he loved them more. There was the “Monday night group” and the “Saturday night group” and the many, many others who will hold Alton in their hearts forever. Alton’s generosity was epic. He not only was generous and giving to his family and friends – but he gave abundantly to the many charities and causes that were special to his friends.

Serving as pallbearers are: Jorge Almeida, Jim Arth, Theran Greer, Steven Mitchelle, Bob Rose, Christian White and Mike White.

Honorary pallbearers are: Liz Armstrong, Shirley James, Adolph Kremel, Joe Neigut and John Rivas.

Alton’s family will receive friends from 5pm to 7 pm on Monday, March 5th at Cook-Walden Funeral Home.

Services for Alton will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, March 6th. Preceding the services, there will be a visitation with reception at 1 pm until time of service, Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard.

Rest in peace, sweet Alton, those of us who loved you are so grateful for your life - you will forever remain in our hearts.
