With sadness our family announces the passing of our mother, Alice Aleman Villegas on Friday, October 27, 2023. She died peacefully and went into the warm and loving arms of our Savior. Petite and small, Mom was the heart and light of our family, and her presence will be greatly missed.
Alice was born March 02, 1934 in Austin to Jesus and Josephina Aleman. She was the youngest and the last surviving of 7 children. Alice spent her younger life growing up in East Austin, attending Cristo Rey Church and living a full family life surrounded by her brother and sisters.
At Austin High School she met and fell in love with Emilio (Pete) Villegas. They married June 1951, and started a life together. As a young wife Alice found a job working at a retail business for a CPA, John Duval, who would take her ‘under his wings’ and teach her bookkeeping. Mr. Duval essentially gave her a career and she enthusiastically learned all she could. It was a skill that would serve her all her life.
Alice and Emilio raised 5 children. Her family was her priority so when not working, Alice and Emilio filled life with music, picnics, boating at City Park, hanging out with aunts, uncles and cousins, barbecues in the backyard, softball and games of pool.
All the while, Alice contributed to the support of her family through bookkeeping. Eventually she started A&P Bookkeeping which successfully served local small businesses. She established a strong reputation as a bookkeeper and built lifelong friendships with many of her customers. Alice also was trusted by CPAs who knew her and who appreciated her accuracy and attention to detail. In fact, over time she helped relatives to prepare for CPA exams by teaching them skills not easily understood by reading textbooks.
After 44 years, her husband died in 1995. Alice continued as a bookkeeper to support herself. She flourished as a business owner in many ways to survive but also because she had a warm, friendly, and independent spirit that showed through in her time as a widow. Alice spent her spare time with children and grandchildren and making new friends. During this time, she enjoyed reading and playing Bingo. She finally retired at 82.
As grown children, we shared a newfound relationship with Mom. She loved being with each of us - all the better if we were together. We watched as she bravely and independently maneuvered through her time as a widow, making every effort to stand on her own. And through all this she loved her family most of all. She treasured every opportunity to be with her family.
Mom - we love you and will never forget you.
