Alice Jean Overton earned her heavenly wings to eternal glory on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Alice was a faithful servant and a beacon of light to many; her infectious smile and her humble spirit touched countless hearts. Through her unwavering faith in God, she exemplified the virtues of faithfulness, love and compassion. She loved sharing scripture, studying the word of God and was always willing to pray for those in need. She also enjoyed spending time at annual Pleasant Valley community cookouts, the Overton Family Reunions and numerous family gatherings. She was always honored to be called upon to pray for the family that she loved dearly.
Alice was the youngest born to Smith Overton Sr. and Beaulah Thompson Overton in Creedmoor, Texas on February 9, 1936. She attended schools in the Bluff Springs School District and at Old Anderson High School. Her mother passed away when she was 12 years old, making her adolescent years challenging. However, with the loving support of her devoted father and caring older siblings, she was able to navigate through those difficult times.
As a child, Alice had the great privilege of growing up across the street from Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, a community-based church in Creedmoor, Texas. She accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized by the church’s first pastor, Pastor T.H. Wright. Later in life, as a devoted believer, Alice became a long-term member of Promiseland Church in Austin, Texas, where she faithfully worshiped for many years.
Alice worked in Building Services for many years before retiring from the State of Texas Employment Commission. After her retirement, Alice’s desire to serve the Lord and her love for children led her to volunteer with the Foster Grandparent Program at Gardner Betts. There, she encouraged youth by expressing love, compassion, and support to those who had lost their way and needed additional family assistance. She loved the young people she worked with, especially enjoying praying and singing with those who needed support and encouragement.
Alice had two special late first cousins who inspired her with their courage and creativity: Richard Overton, the oldest WWII veteran, and Junior Franklin, a member of the Mighty Clouds of Joy. Alice will be reunited with her late parents, cousins, and siblings. Her siblings include Henrietta Hardin, Willie Lee Hardin Roberts, Lillian Dallas, Myrtle King, Chester Overton, Wilkie Overton Sr., Eric Overton, Norris Dorothy Darby, Smith Overton Jr., and John C. Overton.
Alice leaves behind precious memories of her legacy and love. Not only did she deeply love God, her family, and friends, but she is also survived by a very special love of her life, Ray Dodson. Their love, witnessed by Christ our Savior, brought her joy and strength. Alice will forever remain in the hearts of her daughters: Karen Lee, Glenda Lee Washington (Naze Sr.), Pamela Thompson Brooks (Ron Jr.), and Yolanda “Dodie” Godfrey. She is also cherished by her nine grandchildren: Kenneth, Crystal, Aleise, Naze Jr., Dominique, AJ, Amber, Destinee, and Hailey, as well as a host of great-grandchildren.
