Dr. Alice Kidd joined her heavenly Father on February 10, 2009. She was 94 years young. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Maurice and Linda Creamer Kidd. Alice was born April 8, 1914 in Munday, Texas to Edith Lowe and Archer B. Reese. After graduation from Knox City High School, at age 16, she attended Simmons College (now Hardin Simmons University), ultimately receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Elementary Education from West Texas State College. Her first teaching positions, in elementary and secondary schools, included coaching volleyball and teaching Spanish. This was just the beginning of her life's work as an educator, following in the footsteps of a family of teachers. Alice married Jefferson Bennett Kidd in Plainview, Texas where she gave birth to Johnny. After an eight year retirement she returned to teaching and learning, earning a Master's degree from West Texas State College in 1960 with a major in Mathematics Education. After losing Jeff, Alice and Johnny moved to Austin in 1962 so she could participate in a National Science Foundation Academic Year Grant at the University of Texas. Alice taught mathematics at Stephen F. Austin and Reagan high schools and continued her pursuit of a doctorate in Mathematics at the University of Texas. Following a summer term at Rice University as a member of staff in the College of Education she joined the staff of the Texas Education Agency. Through her statewide travels as a consultant and eventually Director of Mathematics for the Texas Education Agency she touched every child in Texas mathematics classes during her tenure. Her love of education led her through a myriad of classrooms at all levels of learning. She was the first Math teacher at Austin High to use an overhead projector. She served on the Governor's Metric System Advisory Board exploring conversion to the metric system. She served as President of the Austin Retired Teacher's Association. Alice's lifetime was rich in many other ways. Her love of God led her through a lifetime of Bible study and teaching through many churches, culminating at Hillcrest Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
