was 84.
Alice was feisty, adventurous and very independent although she claimed to be “mean, ornery, and hateful on her good days.” Friends and family will always remember her free spirit, humor, and good heart.
Alice was born on October 9, 1937 in Frankfort, Indiana to Paul and Beverley Kerns. She moved to Austin in the early 80s and began her 30-year career at UT that included working in the Astronomy Department, the Computer Department, and CEM. Frequent trips to the McDonald Observatory were
always her favorite part of the job.
After retiring from UT, Alice and her best friend, Cora, took off on many adventures. They travelled to East Texas and Oklahoma, spent many hours reading the latest and best books, spent time visiting each other, and loved listening to the police scanner on New Year’s Eve. Alice took several
trips to Indiana by train to visit her family and grandkids. She also volunteered at the Gus Garcia Recreation Center for the Meals on Wheels Program in Austin.
Alice’s love of adventure and travel never slowed down, even when her mobility issues became a problem. With a twinkle in her eye and little regard for distance, Alice could be found cruising all over Austin in her electric wheelchair. It was not unusual for people to comment on how they
spotted her at shops, restaurants, libraries, parks, etc. She often had a co-pilot riding shotgun on these wheelchair excursions - a scruffy little dog named Jackpot.

Alice Cain lived a full life and left a beautiful legacy. She got her wings and is headed for the next great adventure.
