Albert F. Vickers, M.D. was born in Philadelphia on July 9, 1924 to Albert and Regina Ethel Vickers and died on June 25, 2013. After graduation from high school in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania to study metallurgical engineering. He served his country during World War II as a Private in Ordnance and later as a Medical Corpsman. Near the end of the war, he was given the choice to either join the infantry or attend medical school. He chose the latter. He graduated from New York University – Bellevue in New York City in 1949 and continued his military service in Korea and Japan.
After his service he began a long and rewarding medical career as a general practitioner and surgeon, caring for many patients in Austin and Giddings. He was also a member of the Austin Internal Medical Society, Travis County Medical Society Retired Physician's Forum and The Journal Club.
While at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Al met his beloved wife, Virginia Hawthorne Ramage. They married on June 3, 1950 and were blessed with 63 years together. His parents, his brother Richard Merriman Vickers, his sister Regina (Jean) Kubernus, his brothers-in-law, Jewel and Jimmie Ramage and Joe Bushek, and his sister-in-law Hazel Ramage preceded him in death. Left to mourn their loss are his wife, Virginia; his sister, Phyllis Bushek and brother-in-law Dutch Kubernus both of Bucks County, Pennsylvania; his sister-in-law Elizabeth Ramage of Hooks, Texas and his children and their spouses Al and Sandy Vickers, Jennifer Lu and Danny Mikulec, and Laney and Gayle Vickers. The grandchildren he adored beyond measure, Laney, Curtis, Amy, Caroline and Riley and his many nieces and nephews, also survive him.
Al was a very active member of Tarrytown United Methodist Church and served it in many ways. He loved his church family and they loved him. He faithfully attended Men's Bible Conversation, Faith Sunday School class and was President of the Methodist Men. Tennis was a sport he loved and through it he gained many lifelong friends he truly treasured. Wednesdays at Westwood with the Over–the-Hill Gang will never be the same.
His family is grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at Seton Medical Center Austin and the Central Texas Rehabilitation Hospital for the excellent care and boundless kindness shown to Dr. Vickers.
