Abram Amsel died peacefully in Austin on August 31. He is preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Annie, and his sister, Bluma. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Tess, and by his loving and adoring family: his sons, Steve, Andrew, and Geoff; daughters-in-law, Jan, Janice Duff, and Stephanie; grandchildren, Ben, Adam, David Duff-Amsel, Becky, and William; and sister and brother-in-law Millie and Phemie Ostroff. He will be with us, always. Dr. Amsel received his Ph.D. in 1948 and was a professor at the University of Texas for 30 years, where he held the Ashbel Smith Professorship. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the author of scholarly books and treatises, and a tireless researcher and experimentalist. In keeping with tradition, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 4, Chicago, IL 60601--7633. The family extends its sincere thanks to the Retirement Nursing Center and the staff of Hospice Austin, for their care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, September 8 at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. Obituary and guestbook online at wcfish.com
