Victor Norman (Peter) Styrmo passed away peacefully in his sleep at Southlake Regional Health Centre on December 31, 2023 at the age of 96. He was diagnosed with liver cancer in September, received treatment but ended up in the hospital on December 24, 2023. His last days were pain-free and he was surrounded by his friends and family. He radiated love and was at peace.
He was born on a farm in Oak Ridges. As a young boy on a farm, the names Victor and Norman just weren’t farm boy names! Dad was called many names until someone called him Peter and the name stuck.
He spent time in the military as a young man then spent his career working as a museum advisor for the Province of Ontario, the curator of the Marine Museum in Toronto and finished his career as the head of property management for the Toronto Historical Board.
When Dad was not at work, he loved to drive his tractors and work in his workshop. Where Mom was an artist with brushes and paint, Dad was an artist with his arc welder and a grinder. If he couldn’t buy the part he needed, he would just make it himself.
We didn’t have pets but Dad did love animals and we lived with a forest behind the house. His “pets” were Renard, Pretty Fox and their kits (a family of foxes) and Henry the hawk. Dad was less impressed with the squirrels but could never be mad at the chipmunks.
Dad and Mom were avid travellers and had many adventures by air, rail, boat and bus. They traveled to Norway, Ireland, the former Yugoslavia, Jamaica, Colombia, Japan, Thailand and more. Sometimes they even brought Andrew and Brian.
His wife, Diane Styrmo passed away in February 2023. We would like to think they celebrated the New Year together.
He is survived by sons Andrew and Brian, his daughters in law Caroline and Tasha and his three grandchildren Shane, Thomas and Rianne.
A Celebration Of Life ceremony will be held on Monday January 8 at 1:00pm. at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, ON L4G6W8.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to The Alzheimers Society of York Region, 2-240 Edward St Aurora, ON, L4G 3S9
