I've spoken ceaselessly about Savi's laughter, but of course laughter is always accompanied by a smile, and I suppose that is really my enduring image of her. It was the essence of her approach to life. 
I was invited by Liz's sisters Wendy, Promela and Sumi to join them in Trinidad in April to bring Savi's ashes to T&T, and to coincide with their mother's 90th birthday. It was special to spend time with Savi's mother and siblings in the home where she was born, grew up and lived her youth. It was easy to imagine her voice and laughter resounding and mingling with that of her family. From all the stories she recounted over the years I could feel her there and for that matter, everywhere I went on the island. She was a child of that environment - it was her spiritual home. We were able to spread Liz's ashes in the waters off "the Islands" close to Port-of-Spain and her beloved Tobago. Swim free girl. It was of course a chance for her family in Trinidad to also seek some closure. However, it was bitter-sweet for me. It was not the way Liz and I were supposed to visit T&T together for the first time. That said, it was lovely to have been able to take her home to her beloved T&T. Thank you to all her family, including the T&T residents, some of whom I met for the first time, for including me in what was an important and lovely journey but also an emotionally satisfying and rewarding experience.

It has been so difficult for me to put into words the sorrow I feel at the loss of my true love and best friend. We enjoyed over thirty years of laughter and love, we endured struggles and strife, but through it all we were always friends and that friendship grew ever stronger through the years.

When we first met I was of course attracted by her seductive beauty - like most men who met her, I am sure - but the warmth and spirit that radiated from her is what I fell in love with. When I think of Liz I remember her laughter. To these ears that laughter came from deep within, from the heart of a loving soul who was determined that joy and happiness would win out over life’s sorrows.

Her irresistible laugh, her humor and wit and boundless sense of fun brought joy to us all, and that coupled with her generous spirit, humility and quiet, gentle wisdom was what endeared her to us all. She had a sense of fun second to none. She loved to dance and when a party was on offer you could bet your house she may not be the first to arrive, but certainly would likely be the last to leave. She was a truly social animal.

Savi had the most generous soul, not just in her giving but also in forgiving. I cannot ever recall her issuing a serious rebuke or uttering an unkind word to, or about anyone. If she ever raised her voice in anger, you could be sure you deserved it. On the flip side, it was impossible to stay angry with her for long. There wasn't a mean bone in her body.

There is so much more that can be said about Savi, and all the loving tributes to her are testament to that. I will borrow some words that I feel offer a taste of the essence of this warm, vibrant, gentle yet strong…..and beautiful lady. 

..There are those who have little and give it all. These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty. There are those who give with joy, ...and those who give with pain... And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue; they give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space. Through the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He smiles upon the earth. 

Liz loved life and she loved us all - she had a big heart. She gave to us through the joy and warmth she shared, through her kind, thoughtful actions and in so many quiet ways. She was always a great support to me and I will cherish the unquestioned love she gave me – it has been my rock from the earliest days of our friendship. I was always drawn to her. It was impossible to resist or deny her.

I believe we always knew where we stood in each other’s hearts. Though Savi was a free spirit she was always true. She lived her life her way; however it seemed to me with the deep sadness it brought her, that Jason's illness and passing changed her fundamentally and she was ready for change. We had been on a long dance getting back together again. I looked forward to spending our future together, hopefully as man and wife. But fate has denied us. The world feels quieter and not as warm and happy a place without her animated voice and infectious laughter. Time will help to heal our loss, but the sadness in knowing she was also denied her future will always leave unanswered questions. It is difficult to imagine a world without her, but her spirit and love will live on in our hearts and thoughts.

Liz knew from the start of her final ordeal what the future held for her. She heard and clearly understood what was said when the doctors gave their prognosis. She may not have been conscious of her fate in every moment – she fought to deny the cancer, and subconsciously that fate, and stay vital in all our lives. Yes there was confusion even delusion, but this was also her fighting to create her on-going life. What strength and courage she showed throughout those fifteen months. I believe in her final weeks she was making her peace with us all and she went out of her way to be sure we knew we had her love. That's what she wanted us to know, in her way - no fuss, just showing it to us in the manner she had always done, with laughter, wit, warmth and tenderness. 

She was one of a kind and absolutely impossible to forget, my darling girl Savi.

Dear Liz.  What a beautiful woman.  Charming, funny, empathetic. We met at Seneca over thirty years ago and became fast friends.  I laughed so much with Liz my sides would split. Lizzy....we go way back when together over a span of thirty plus years during our time at the college.  Liz always had a smile, her laugh was contagious, a wry sense of humour and it seemed as if there was always a certain brightness surrounding her.  Her beauty was both inside and out.  We shared so many laughs over the years and in fact I will never forget the way she laughed.  I can hear it right now.  I'm sorry that her last years were a hardship. She deserved so much more as she looked forward to her retirement.  I will miss her truly and I hope that she is at peace, at rest and maybe shaking it up a little wherever she is.  ❤❤

Savi, Elizabeth, Liz was many things to many people but to me she was a long time colleague, a kindred spirit, and a beautiful person.  When I think about the 25+ years we spent working together, what sticks out is how proud I am of her.

In her career, she was the dream employee.  She cheerfully served hundreds of thousands of students over the years.   She took responsibility for her work and saw every single task, big or small right through to the end.  She was so hard working that there was never any need to worry about what Liz was looking after.  You could always count on her to do great work.  She truly cared about what she was doing, the students, her colleagues and we all loved her back for it.

Liz was a kindred spirit to many of us at work.  We shared lots of life experiences, the delights and the challenges. Although Liz seemed to have more than her fair share of life challenges, she was able to ultimately face them with grace, humour and most notably, strength. Liz saw the sunnier side of life and enjoyed a good laugh.  Those of us who worked with her were lucky enough to share many ups and downs through the laughter and the tears. 

On a physical level, Liz was a true beauty.   As obvious as that was, it was her inner light that just grabbed your attention.  She was so generous with her gifts, her thoughtfulness, her time and her genuine, radiant smile.  

When I think of Liz, I think of how proud I am to have known her.  I will miss her terribly until we meet again.

Dear Liz,

You brought life and laughter into a room when you entered.  I wish I could've spent more personal time with you, I believe I could have learned
how to enjoy life more.  I have so much respect for you Liz I always will.
I know you'll be fine because you'll be re-united with your son once again and we can rejoice for you because we know you're in a very good place.
