It is with heavy hearts and sore eyes that we announce the passing of R. "Bruce" (Butch) McKinnon. Bruce passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday December 30th, 2023 at the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket. He was very much a family man and was over the moon when he had his children Andrew and Sarah with his wife of 45 years Mary.
Born in Toronto to Bruce Sr. and Leta McKinnon, he grew up in Leaside as the oldest of 4 children - brother Monty (Donna) McKinnon and the twin sisters Terri (John) Simpson and Carole McKinnon.
From an early age he took a fond interest in the stock market along with his Dad. While he only completed a grade 9 education, he later went on to get his trading license from the Canadian Securities Commission and became a professional trader on the floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange located then at 234 Bay St. Toronto, ON.
After leaving the TSX and moving north in 1993 he worked for Magna International where he remained until his retirement in 2006 at the age 69.
We would be remiss not to mention his best friend Vance Smith whom they spent endless hours laughing together, supporting each other, and building the friendship that would last a lifetime.
In his retirement he enjoyed spending quality time with his family, including the family pets. He also continued his love of trading and would enjoy watching the ticker tape roll across the TV screen actively looking for Gold and Silver highs and lows. His family has fond memories of him in his later years during outings, doctor’s visits and trying to sell silver to anyone who would listen.
If you wish to donate, in Bruce’s memory a donation to the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket would be appreciated.
A Private Service was held.
