Isabel was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, in 1935, the younger of two sisters (Claire and Isabel) to Dr. Frederick Walter and Christine FitzGerald. In 1958, Isabel graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital Training School for Nurses, in Montreal. As a registered nurse, her career spanned four decades, including many years at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital. In 1993, she returned to McGill to earn her Diploma in Education.
A loving and supportive wife to Hugh Grant Murray for over 58 years, Isabel was a caring mother to Hugh (Margaret) and Andrew (Florence), cherished grandmother to Connor, Shannon, William and Annabelle, and much- loved aunt to Sharon and Christina. Isabel will be remembered by family, friends and patients for her compassion and exuberant spirit.
With her move from Montreal to Aurora 3 years ago, it was a treasured gift for her Ontario based family to be able to enjoy Isabel’s kindness, sense of humour, generosity, and infectious smile more often. Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Hollandview Trail Retirement Residence for the care and comfort they brought to Isabel in the final years and days of her life. Thanks also to the cancer care team at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, and to Dr. Carol Bates for their support and care of Isabel.
Donations in Isabel’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Memorial services for Isabel will take place in Montreal in the Spring of 2022.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ThompsonFH-Aurora.com for the Murray family.
