Just two months shy of her 101st birthday, Ethel passed away peacefully at the Oak Ridges Retirement Residence on Monday, March 13, 2023. Ethel was predeceased by her loving husband William Adams (Bill) Buck in 2018 in their 73rd year of marriage.
Ethel will be sorely missed by her son William David Buck and his wife Mary, and her daughter Penny Caston and her husband Art. Fondly loved by her five grandchildren and their spouses: William Jason Buck and Sarah, Jordan Buck and Pantea, Kim Moulsdale and Barry, David Caston and Kelley, and Laura Buck Spagnolo and Rob. Eleven great grandchildren also got to experience Ethel’s inspiring presence.
Ethel was born in Timmins, Ontario in 1922, the second daughter of George Washington Buckindale and Ethel Parr. At the age of six, her father was tragically killed in a mining accident leaving her mother with three young daughters. The family then moved to Aurora, Ontario where the three Buckindale sisters, Dorothy, Ethel and Reva, spent their active childhood. Ethel was an accomplished pianist and singer, winning gold medals for singing at the Kiwanis Musical Festival and also enjoyed speed skating.
She met her future husband, Bill Buck, while working in administration at the General Engineering (GECO) munitions factory in Toronto during WWII. They were married in 1945 and welcomed son Bill (1947) and daughter Penny (1949) into their nuclear family. She and Bill worked together again at Fredrick Market in the Davenport/Ossington area where Bill was manager of the family run business.
Ethel was active in the church, singing in the choir of Davenport Presbyterian. They moved to Islington in 1958 to continue raising their family and enjoying many friendships. They travelled to many places across Canada while attending Canadian Progress Club events as well as trips to the US and Europe.
She and Bill took early retirement and moved to Gravenhurst in 1977 to enjoy the Muskoka life style and wintering in Florida. She was active in golf, curling and St James Anglican Church groups.
Ethel and Bill returned to her hometown of Aurora in their later years to be close to family and friends. They moved into Oak Ridges Retirement Residence in their early nineties where they spent their final years.
A celebration of Ethel’s life will be held at Thompson Funeral Home at 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora on Saturday, April 1, 2023 with visitation beginning at 10 am, Service at 11am followed by interment at Aurora Cemetery.
