June 13, 1943 – July 27, 2012
Toronto District Fire Chief, Retired (1969-2006)
It is with great sadness that Sandra his wife, and Evelyn, his daughter, must announce the passing of a beloved husband and devoted father. Dennis died at home, surrounded by family, after a twelve year fight with prostate cancer.
Dennis was most proud of his long marriage of 48 years, his daughter Evelyn, his years of service in the Royal Canadian Regiment, and his 37 year career as a Firefighter with North York (now Toronto Fire Services). He retired in 2006 in the rank of District Fire Chief.
After retirement, Dennis was able to explore a new passion for writing and poetry. He started a book of short stories about his experiences as a firefighter and wrote at least 150 poems with various themes. Many of these related to the firefighter experience and several have been published in the local paper and firefighter support web sites.
Dennis lived by his motto of “improvise, adapt, modify and overcome”. This philosophy served him well in his private life and his professional career. The protection of his family and the men he led was paramount to Dennis. He made his life worthwhile and meaningful. He had a strong moral compass and clear cut values which were passed to him by his Grandfather Henry Bowyer and his Uncle Doug Jarvis.
His friends, extended family, colleagues and neighbours will miss Dennis, with his dry sense of humour, sharp wit and willingness to lend a hand. Anyone who knew Dennis will never forget him.
The last bell has rung, you can rest now.
We want to thank the Palliative Home Care team led by Dr. M. Fry for their professional care and compassion.
Cremation has taken place and Dennis has returned to Sandra’s care. No flowers please. A gathering of family and friends will take place at a future date at their home. Condolences may be offered at www.thompsonfh-aurora.com.
