He was a member of MT Cannon Baptist Church until he and his childhood friend, Danny Thomas, left Alabama in May of 1961 and headed west for a better life. They stopped in Arizona for a few weeks. They didn't like it so they left and went to California.
Danny says they left the country and became city boys. They got a job at a farm to earn money. They were best friends who became family.
Thearthur married Dora Pearl Thomas and to that union Yolanda Valencia Craig was born. After that marriage ended he met then married Alma Craig on November 5th 1977. She had 2 sons from a previous marriage, Guy and Yul Johnson, and the five became a family.
Yolanda's fondest memory of her father was simply sitting in the garage talking about life and laughing.
Guy's best memories of his father was how he treated his mother, Alma, and his work ethic. He was a great example of how to treat a woman.
Thearthur always was a hard worker. Usually working two jobs at a time. He retired as a supervisor for the janitorial department as well as a cook for the Los Angeles county school district. Hiis hobbies included travel, woodworking and cooking.
He was succeeded in life by his wife Alma in 2011. Due to his dementia, Yul moved him to Colorado in 2015 to live with family.
He is survived by one Brother four Sisters., one sister in law, one Brother in law. Luther and Della Moore of Colorado Springs, CO, Bettye Hill of Seattle, Washington Augusta Oliver of Jamaica, NY Jessie Craig of Brooklyn, NY and Mary and John Felder of Bronx, NY.
He leaves behind to mourn are his daughter Yolanda Wallace, step son Guy Johnson, ten grandchildren, Eric Johnson, Yul Johnson Jr, Candis Jenkins, Guyniesha Johnson,Cherri Rodriguez, Guy Johnson Jr, Armiondo Johnson, Monae' Wallace and Iyanna Wallace, and eight great grandchildren, Alyssa, Aubry, Eric Jr, Cire, Ailana, David, and Ana'lia.
