Retired 1st SGT EVANS, Ga. - Retired 1st SGT Thomas L. Roland, Sr., 67, of Evans, Georgia passed away Monday, July 25, 2011. Mr. Roland served in the United States Army for twenty-seven years. He served with the 75th Rangers in Vietnam and most of his career consisted of serving as a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Jackson. Following his retirement from service, he worked at Savannah River Site and Augusta Chronicle. He was a tribal elder of the Poarch Creek Indians; the American Legion Post 192 and VFW 3200. Mr. Roland was also a partial owner of Joy Dry Cleaners. Mr. Roland is survived by his wife, Hwan Hui Roland; three children, Thomas L. (Paula) Roland, Jr. of Pelion, SC, Tamera Roland of Elverson, PA and Unchong (Craig) Obrist of Lawrenceville, GA; sister, Fayellen Trotter of Winterville, GA; three brothers, William (Phyllis) Roland of Evans, James Roland of Lincolnton, GA and Franklin (Jean) Cape of Madison, GA; and four granddaughters, India May Rain Vone, Charles Roland Fry, Emma Obrist and Elli Obrist. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 - 9 PM at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Saturday, July 30, 2011 in the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home with Pastors Han Sang Won and Phillip Winsett officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society , P. O. Box 1725, Augusta, GA 30903 in Tommy's memory.
