G W Holmes

GW was born to Willie Robert and Docia Doolittle Holmes on December 17, 1933, in Edgefield, SC, and was the youngest of their seven children. After moving to Blythe, Georgia during the Great Depression, he became a lifelong resident of Richmond County, Georgia.

From a young age, he was hard-working, determined, and the kind of person who wanted to help others whenever he could. He was a life-long avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved the outdoors. As a young adult, GW was a member of the Augusta Boxing Club where became a Golden Glove Boxing Champion. He worked in the pattern department at Georgia Iron Works before starting his own tile contracting business. With the success of his tile business, he decided to branch out into home building and found success there as well with the Holmes Construction Company, building homes throughout the CSRA. Through his hard work, strong work-ethic, and commitment to honesty and integrity in his business, he built a strong reputation for quality and professionalism. He was a two-time nominated president of the Georgia Home Builders Association. Always willing to help others, he proudly hosted a televised Easter Seals Fundraiser. He never met a stranger and always had a kind word for anyone he came across.

GW was predeceased by his son Gerald (Jerry) Wesley Holmes Jr.; his parents: Docia Doolittle Holmes and Willie Robert Holmes; and his siblings: Willie Mae Holmes Schumann, James Robert Holmes (Sarah), Marvin Holmes (Jonny), Ray Vernon Holmes Sr., Alice Holmes Reid (Robert), Kathleen Holmes Robles.

He leaves behind his children: Judith Holmes Rogers, Janice Holmes Seigler (Mickey), Debra Holmes Griesel (Scott), Sandra Kay Holmes, step-son Jesse Shackleford (Laura); grandchildren: Tara Holmes Lawton, Jessica Reese (Randy), Jason Peacher (Brandy), Judith Rogers May (James), Diana Holmes, Juston North (Stephanie), Ashley Holmes, Jennifer Seigler Moore (Dennis), Travis Seigler, Jesse Shackelford Jr., Tyler Shackelford, Charlie Grace Shackelford; great-grandchildren: Jessica Peacher, Juniper Peacher, Olivia Peacher, Wyatt Peacher, Kinley Peacher, Shepherd Peacher , Braeden Peacher, Jaydon North, Jacob May, Ayran May, Meghan Fowler Flury (Travis), Sarah Fowler, Brandon Daley, Hayli Reagan, Ellis Carroll, Stephen Carter, Quinn Lawton, Kelsey Lawton, Ansley Lawton, Katelyn Moore, Daniel Moore, Wyatt Moore; and many great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Juston North, Jaydon North, Jacob May, Ray Vernon Holmes Jr., Tyler Schumann, Shepherd Peacher.

A visitation for G W will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, Georgia 30906. A funeral services will occur Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM, 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, Georgia 30906. An interment will occur Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2700 Deans Bridge Rd, Augusta, Georgia 30906.
