Age 86, of Auburn, Maine - Normand passed away peacefully on December 26, 2022 with family members by his side. Norm was born on Saturday July 11, 1936 in Lewiston, Maine to the late Robert and Rose Laliberte. Norm was an avid sports fan and followed the Boston professional teams with an undying passion that he passed along to his three sons. He served eight years as an Auburn Suburban Little League coach for his sons, leading the East Auburn team to several championships. He also managed the Gayton Post Legion team for three years. He was active in the Biddy Basketball program at the Auburn YMCA for many years as a coach and referee.
Norm relished the opportunities to watch his sons and grandchildren participate in their various sports and activities. He enjoyed family and friends gathering at his house for the holidays and around the pool in the summer. Norm loved playing cards and was an avid poker, pinochle, and cribbage player.
Norm attended schools in Monmouth, Maine where he was a standout basketball and baseball player and graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1954. He went into the Navy as a boilerman after his graduation and was honorably discharged in 1958. During this time he was able to visit many countries and he liked to share his adventures in these ports.
After the Navy he used his welding skills to join the local pipefitter’s union and eventually got a position at International Paper in Jay, Maine. He worked many years at the paper mill before re-joining the pipefitters until he retired several years later.
Norm had a gift of forming lasting friendships. Along with his quick wit and great sense of humor, Norm was kind, intelligent, approachable, and easy to talk with. He had many life-long friendships from his co-workers and people he met through the many organizations for which he volunteered. Even in his final years of life, he created tight bonds with a new once-a-week breakfast bunch.
Norm is survived by sons Jerry Laliberte and his wife Sharon, Jim Laliberte, and Tom Laliberte and his wife Jeni, his sister Muriel Nadeau and her husband Roger. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren as well as 10 nieces and nephews and many more loving family and friends. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Bob Laliberte, and his wife of 62 years Jeanne Laliberte.
The family will receive visitors at The Fortin Group Funeral Home in Auburn on Saturday, January 7th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am followed by an in-house service.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in Norm’s name.
