Miss Dorothy Higgins, age 88, formerly of 14 White St. in Lewiston died Thursday afternoon March 31st at The Hospice House with family at her side. She was born in Haverhill, MA on April 16, 1927, the daughter of David R. and Genevieve M. (Wellehan) Higgins. Dorothy was educated in the Auburn school system, graduated from Edward Little High School with the class of 1946 and the former Auburn Maine School of Commerce with a Teaching Certificate. She was employed for 25 years in the Insurance Adjusting business and also served as a charter member and Past President of Insurance Women of Androscoggin Valley. Following her years in insurance work, she spent a number of years working for the Auburn Housing Authority as a Housing Specialist until her retirement. Being a woman of strong faith, Dorothy was an active member for many years at the former St. Joseph's Church in Lewiston where she served as Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Parish Council, a member of the Queen's Guild, CCD teacher for 20 years, and taught the baptism class. She also was a graduate of the Center of Parish Ministry. Dorothy was a longtime active volunteer at Central Maine Medical Center, served on the Executive Board of the Women's' Hospital Association and as a member of the hospital's Pastoral Care Department. She also volunteered for several years with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She was a loving, devoted and hardworking sister and aunt who will be dearly missed. She leaves behind two brothers Bill Higgins and his wife Joyce of Auburn and Gene Higgins and his wife Claudie of Yarmouth; a sister-in-law Marilyn Higgins of Cumberland Center and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents and two brothers James Higgins and David Higgins Jr. The family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Sarah Frye, Clover Manor (Dublin) and Beacon Hospice and their special caregivers Chrissy, Jamie, Angela, and Kathy for the comfort, support and love they all provided for our sister. A Mass of Christian will be celebrated Tues. 11 AM at Sacred Heart Church. At her prior request, there are no visiting hours. Interment will take place later in the Spring in the family lot at Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be given to Sacred Heart Church, 24 Sacred Heart Place Auburn, ME 04210.
