Born May 9, 1919, Katherine Evelyn DeWitt passed just 6 days short of her 101st birthday died on May 3, 2020. She was a resident of Auburn, CA for 25 years and 40 years in Nevada County, her last 3 1/2 years residing at Oakwood Village Assistant Living.
Daughter of Mathew M. Lummer and Anne Tabler, both immigrants from Austria and Hungary. Katherine was born in Watts, CA. The youngest of three children, and having been orphaned at age 7, she and her older sister by five years, Anna Watts, were raised by her older brother Rudy Lummer, who was only 16 years old at the time.
Katherine married Rudolph DeWitt on August 3, 1940. They were married for 44 years. Katherine is survived by 2 of her 3 children Kathy Sweet, (Husband Gary) of Grass Valley, CA, Goldie DeWitt Blaszkowski ,(Husband Blaze) of Citrus Heights, CA and daughter Bernice DeWitt Miller deceased in 1989 also from Auburn, CA.
During WWII she worked as a welder in Long Beach Naval yard and then proceeded to work at the DeWitt State Hospital for 20 years as a laundress and then at the Veteran’s Home in Yountville, CA for 8 years. She retired in 1979.
She had 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren for a grand total of 16 who all lovingly called her “MeMe”. She was very proud of her family.
She continued to amaze everyone with her sharp mind and passion for life. She was an amazing woman who touched the lives of so many. She will be deeply and thoughtfully missed.
