Hatsumasa Hamasaki was born on January 20, 1924 in Auburn, California to Torajiro and Katsu Hamasaki. His family owned a farm where he lived and worked until World War II. The family was sent to a Japanese internment camp during the war, but Hats was released to serve in the U.S. Army. After the war, Hats returned to farming. In March 1960 he married Mae Furusho and moved to Loomis, California. He spent the next fifty-five years in the area, where he continued to farm, while also working in maintenance in the grocery industry and raising his family. Hats could fix almost anything. He could also grow almost anything and was known for his delicious fruits and vegetables, especially his sweet corn, which he shared with family, friends and neighbors. In addition to working in his garden, Hats enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was a long-time member of the Placer Buddhist Church. Hats passed away peacefully on July 21, 2022. He is survived by his two children, Kim Wong (husband David) and Craig Hamasaki (wife Sara), four grandchildren, Brian and Daniel Wong and Kyle and Emily Hamasaki, and his sisters Fumiye Nakagaki and Aiko Kumamaru.
A private service was held for family.
