Walter Barnett Fairchild, 81, widower of Wanda (Bynum) Fairchild, was called home by his Lord on January 1, 2022. Mr. Fairchild was born on November 17, 1940, in Baton Rouge, LA, to the late Barnett and Marion Cavis Hopkins Fairchild.
He grew up in Birmingham, AL, where he was a long-time resident, eventually settling in Pinson, AL. Upon honorable discharge from the army, he began a business career. After many years as a top salesman for Mutual Benefit Group, he qualified as a Chartered Financial Consultant and founded his own financial services company. He was a faithful family man, actively involved in his children’s education and activities, and gladly offered continued support to his grandchildren as a loving and fun Papa. He demonstrated his love for the Lord by serving people – neighbors, widows, orphans and those in prison. He initiated the Royal Ambassadors ministry to young men and boys at Huffman Baptist Church and served as deacon and Sunday School Director at First Baptist Church, Pinson. He enjoyed woodworking, yardwork and gardening, golf and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Fairchild Traylor (Steve); son, Jeffrey Barnett Fairchild (Misti); sister, Hilda Fairchild Williams (Don); and granddaughters, Blake Fairchild, Sarah Traylor Williams (Stephen), Sydney Fairchild and Mackenzie Kate Fairchild; and many nieces and nephews – all of whom he loved dearly.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Laura Fairchild Griffith; brother, Herman Eugene “Buddy” Fairchild; and grandson, Andrew Steven Traylor.
Special thanks to his long-time pastor and friend, Dr. Gary Fisher, for officiating his service, and to Hopewell Baptist Church for loving cards, visits, and compassionate service in his later years.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 7, from 11 a.m. to noon at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Attalla, AL, followed immediately after by a celebration of life service in the chapel. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery in Gadsden, AL.
