John is a native of Louisville, Tennessee and graduated from Friendsville High School (TN) as a member of the Class of 1961. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1966. After graduation, John began his vocational life as a drafting teacher at Rule High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent a large part of his career in drafting and sales with Machine Products, Inc. of Attalla, Alabama. One of his proudest accomplishments was founding and operating Anchor Machine and Fabrication, Inc. from 1995 until his retirement.
John was involved in several civic organizations including the Gadsden Jaycees and proudly served as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. He most definitely believed in giving back and his generosity manifested itself in many ways among family members, friends, and colleagues.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John A. Goforth, Sr. and Mary Kate (Drake) Goforth and his beloved cat and companion “Peanut”. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret McGinnis Goforth; daughter, Shannon (Russ) Waits; grandson, Austin (Hannah) Waits; granddaughter, Sara Margaret Waits; and great-grandson, Thomas Cannon Waits. John was lovingly known as “Bubba” to his grandchildren. They were truly his pride and joy.
John was notorious for capturing the hearts of friends and family alike with his clever jokes and storytelling. His humor and lighthearted spirit will certainly be missed.
To honor John’s memory, the family will hold a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Salvation Army at give.salvationarmyusa.org online.
