George Davis Varner, Sr., a resident of Gadsden, AL, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, after a valiant battle with cancer. Visitation will be at Gadsden First United Methodist Church on Monday, December 18th from 11:00-1:00 with a memorial service immediately following. He is survived by his wife, Lori Mayer Varner; children, George Davis Varner, Jr. and Collin Rainey Varner (Elizabeth); mother, Mary Elizabeth Torbert; brothers, John Crawford Varner (Penney) and Thomas Holcombe Varner; sister, Molly Varner Elrod; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas George Varner.
George was a native of Tuskegee, AL. He received a B.S. in Building Construction from Auburn University in 1982 which led him to New Orleans, where he met the love of his life and his spouse of over 38 years. He eventually made his way to Gadsden, AL where he found lifelong friends, many of whom were like family to him. He was a proud and active member of Gadsden First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, being outdoors (especially fishing and hunting), and volunteering his time in the service of others.
